An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number the IRS issues to certain individuals who need to file a U.S. tax return but are not eligible for a Social Security Number. Castagnet Tax Consulting Group helps nonresidents, foreign nationals, and their dependents prepare and submit ITIN applications and renewals. Learn more about our services on our home page.
What Is an ITIN?
An ITIN allows a person who is not eligible for a Social Security Number to file a required U.S. tax return, be listed as a dependent or spouse on someone else’s return, or otherwise comply with U.S. tax reporting obligations. An ITIN does not authorize someone to work in the United States and is not proof of immigration status.
Who Needs an ITIN?
- Nonresident aliens who need to file a Form 1040-NR and do not have a Social Security Number
- Foreign owners of U.S. LLCs who need to file a personal U.S. return related to their LLC’s activity
- Spouses or dependents of a U.S. taxpayer who are being claimed on a return and are not eligible for a Social Security Number
- Individuals whose previously issued ITIN has expired and needs to be renewed
Form W-7 and Required Documentation
Applying for or renewing an ITIN requires filing Form W-7 along with original or properly certified identification documents, and, in most cases, a U.S. federal tax return. The IRS is specific about which documents it will accept and how they must be certified or submitted. We help you complete Form W-7 accurately and understand which supporting documents apply to your situation.
How Castagnet Tax Consulting Group Can Help
We review your situation to determine whether you need a new ITIN or a renewal, help you complete Form W-7, and coordinate the ITIN application with your related tax return when one is required. If your identification documents need to be certified before submission, we will walk you through the accepted options for doing so.
Our Process
- Initial review to confirm whether an ITIN application or renewal is needed
- Checklist of required documentation
- Preparation of Form W-7 and any related tax return
- Review with you before submission
- Submission to the IRS and confirmation
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to receive an ITIN?
Processing times are set by the IRS and can vary. We can share current estimated processing times when we prepare your application, since these timeframes change from year to year.
Do ITINs expire?
Yes. An ITIN can expire if it has not been used on a U.S. tax return for a period of consecutive years, or under other IRS rules that are updated from time to time. We can check the status of your ITIN and let you know if a renewal is needed.
Can I apply for an ITIN at the same time as my tax return?
In many cases, yes. Form W-7 is often submitted along with the tax return that creates the need for the ITIN. We can help you prepare both together.
